Beer Cocktails…. Yes Please!

By Dave Swanson
As soon as summer hits, consumption of the world’s most popular alcoholic beverage

beer-cocktails_280pixspikes. Naturally, beer sales peak from May through August—the warmest months of the year. Stouts, pale ales, lambics, hefeweizens, and—of course—IPAs, we love ‘em all.

But as the dog days of summer approach, our taste buds start to look for other refreshers. Enter beer cocktails.

While trend-spotters have hyped beer cocktails as a hot new phenomenon, the truth is that beer cocktails have been around for a long time.

There are blue collar standbys like the Boilermaker: a shot of whiskey or bourbon slopped into a glass of pilsner. And in Mexico, we like the Michelada: light lager, tomato juice or Clamato, lime juice, and a dash of hot sauce. There’s even beer mixed with beer, like the Black and Tan.

Beer Breakfast a Raging Success

Beer Breakfast – March 29, 2014

Thank you to the 300+ attendees and supporters of our most recent Beer Breakfast Event that was held this past Saturday, March 29th in downtown St. Pete at the Mandarin Hide. The weather was perfect and the vibe was so incredibly positive as we raised awareness, memberships and monetary support for Tampa Bay Watch, our local 501(c)3 non-profit group who strives in their efforts of ‘Restoring the Bay Every Day’.

The final figures are not yet official, but from initial reports it looks like we will have raised over $6,000 at the event with proceeds to Tampa Bay Watch being slightly less after expenses. We should all be VERY proud of this accomplishment and know this was the single greatest event raise in the 12+ year history of Beer Breakfast!! I am humbled and grateful to all of my family and friends for seeing the value in this silly idea of mine that began with four people in 2002 in the alley behind Mastry’s (thanks Mom!).

Beer Breakfast is…. Revelry~Fellowship~Sanctuary as we bring good people together for ‘Merriment with a Mission’!!

Beer Breakfast Fun Facts About Beer Part 2

If St. Petersburg (and Beer Breakfast of course!) had an official alcoholic beverage, it would probably be beer. According to the Brewers Association, the overall U.S. beer market was worth $96 billion in 2011, guinness-stout_150pixwhen some 200 million barrels of beer were sold (1 barrel equals 31 gallons of beer). In the same year, 1,989 breweries in the United States were fermenting everything from light lagers to chocolaty stouts. MMMmmm, Guinness anyone?

So what’s in a glass? Water, mostly. But also flowers, fungus and grains. Beer gets much of its flavor from hops, which are vine-grown flowers that look more like mini-pinecones than daisies. The alcohol in beer comes from grain, usually barley, which is malted (or allowed to germinate) and then steeped in water to extract its sugars. Those sugars become a feast for yeast, the tiny, unicellular fungi that thrive on sugars and excrete alcohol.

Yeasts usually get filtered out of commercial beers before they’re bottled, but they leave traces (and flavors) behind. A study published in August 2010 in the Journal of Proteome Research found that beers contain a surprising variety of proteins: at least 62, 40 of which come from yeast. These proteins are key in supporting beer’s foamy head, the researchers noted.

And that brings us back full circle to…. Beer Breakfast! Please join us at the next Beer Breakfast Event in support of Tampa Bay Watch being held at the Mandarin Hide on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 9am. Come one, come all and help us raise awareness and funding to keep the estuaries of Tampa Bay clean and healthy!! A Beer Breakfast is…. Revelry~Fellowship~Sanctuary.
